Investing.com - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose new tariffs on countries targeting American tech companies with digital taxes or related regulations and restrict technology exports.

In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump accused foreign governments of discriminating against U.S. tech companies through digital services taxes and digital market rules, while giving Chinese tech giants “full right of passage.”

Trump wrote: “I warn all countries that impose digital taxes, legislation, rules or regulations with this TRUTH that unless these discriminatory acts are removed, I will impose significant additional tariffs on that country's exports to the United States and impose export restrictions on our highly protected technology and chips.”

These comments come at a time when Washington is experiencing renewed trade tensions with Europe, India and other economies trying to impose taxes on digital services. Trump has long criticized such taxes, arguing that such taxes unfairly target U.S. firms such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL).

Trump added: “Respect America and our amazing Tech Companies, or think about the consequences.”
