US President Donald Trump stated that he plans to discuss Nvidia's cutting-edge Blackwell artificial intelligence chip during his meeting with China President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
Sales of high-quality AI chips produced by the US-based firm have become a significant obstacle in the long-standing trade talks between the world's two largest economies. China is displeased with Washington's restrictions on the sale of the most advanced AI chips, which the US justifies by claiming that China's military could enhance its capabilities using these chips.
Trump referred to Nvidia's Blackwell chip as a "super super chip" while aboard Air Force One during a journey to Gyeongju, South Korea, and said he could discuss the matter with Xi. "We can talk about this with President Xi," Trump expressed, indicating he felt "very hopeful" about the meeting.
According to a Reuters report, Nvidia was preparing a lower-cost version of the latest Blackwell chips for China. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated on Tuesday that the company did not file for a US export license to send its latest chips due to China's position. "China's current situation clearly indicates they don’t want Nvidia there," he said, emphasizing the need for access to the Chinese market for US-based research and development funding.
American administrations have pursued inconsistent policies regarding Nvidia's advanced chips entering the Chinese market. The Chinese government, in response to US export controls, is pressuring Chinese firms to source and develop local chips. However, despite these pressures, Chinese developers continue to have demand for Nvidia's chips due to the limited supply of products from domestic competitors (such as Huawei).
