U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the possibility of meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a luncheon with Republican members of Congress at the White House.
Trump emphasized that trade negotiations with China are ongoing and noted that high tariffs are still being applied to the country. At the beginning of his speech, he said, "I will be going to South Korea in two weeks to meet with President Xi. We will discuss many topics there. I hope these negotiations will yield good results."
However, Trump also conveyed the message that the meeting might not take place, stating, "We aim to reach a fair agreement with China. I expect a successful meeting (with Xi), but it may not happen."
It is expected that Trump and Xi will meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit scheduled for October 31 - November 1. This summit presents an important opportunity for the two leaders to shape their relationship.
