U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week as part of his Asia trip. This historic meeting will take place on October 30 during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
There has long been an unresolved search for a trade agreement between the world's two largest economies. According to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the purpose of this meeting is to reduce trade tensions.
In a statement made on October 23, Trump said, “We will come out of this meeting with very good results, and everyone will be very happy.” South Korean Presidential Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac also confirmed that Trump and Xi will participate in the APEC summit, but the Chinese side has not yet made a formal statement.
This meeting will be the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Trump's return to office in January. Ahead of the meeting, the future of a temporary trade ceasefire, which is set to end on November 10, remains uncertain. If the parties cannot agree on a new extension, the existing ceasefire will expire. Additionally, Trump set November 1 as the deadline for a new 100% tariff this month.
