US President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a pioneering meeting during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. In statements to the press, both leaders noted that the relations between the two countries are on a very positive trajectory.
Following the talks, Trump stated, “We will make a deal with Brazil, and we will likely reach agreements on some issues quickly. I will leave the details to the trade teams.” He emphasized that “everything will be fair” regarding tariffs, saying, “I believe we will make quite good agreements for both countries.”
President Trump expressed optimism about relations with China, stating, “I believe we will make a deal with China,” and noted that they would likely meet in Washington or at Mar-a-Lago. “I expect a very fair meeting with China; my hopes for an agreement are high,” he said, also expressing sorrow for the experiences of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula indicated that the agenda for the meeting had been prepared in writing beforehand, saying, “There is no reason for Brazil and the US to be in disagreement.” This statement suggests that cooperation between the two countries is set to increase.
