U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has approved the sale of Nvidia's (NVDA) H200 graphics processing units (GPUs) to China. This development is seen as part of the United States' efforts to enhance its competitiveness in the semiconductor sector.
Trump stated in a social media post, "I informed President Xi of China that the U.S. will allow Nvidia to send its H200 products to approved customers and other countries under conditions that will strengthen national security. President Xi responded positively to this decision." He also mentioned that 25% of the sales will be paid to the U.S., emphasizing that this regulation will support American employment and production.
Trump pointed out that the Commerce Department has clarified the details of the process and that a similar approach would apply to AMD (AMD), Intel (INTC), and other American technology companies. This situation enables companies in the sector to compete more effectively in international markets.
In the past, the Trump administration had allowed the sale of Nvidia's lower-capacity H20 model to China. However, Chinese officials halted imports of the H20 model by asserting that it was technologically inadequate and harmful to the environment. This new decision may increase demand for Nvidia's more advanced H200 model in the Chinese market.
Nvidia welcomed Trump's decision and expressed that this would contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. semiconductor sector by creating high-paying jobs. The company noted that offering H200 GPUs to customers monitored by the Commerce Department represents a balanced approach.
These developments are significant for trade relations between the U.S. and China and present new opportunities in the semiconductor industry.
