Trump dismisses Fed Governor Cook, dollar falls

Investing.com- The U.S. dollar lost value on Tuesday after President Donald Trump fired Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook for alleged mortgage fraud. The move has raised concerns about the independence of the central bank.

The U.S. Dollar Index, the indicator that measures the value of green money against a basket of major currencies, fell 0.2 percent in Asian hours.

Dollar Index Futures were also trading down 0.2 percent as of 01:24 GMT.

Treasury bond yields initially fell but later rose slightly; the benchmark 10-year bond yield rose 0.3 percent to 4.2887 percent.

In a letter posted on social media, Trump said: “There is 'ample reason' for Cooke's dismissal.”

Cook, the first African-American woman to serve on the Fed board, was fired after allegations that she made misleading statements on mortgage documents.

The Japanese yen gained value against the dollar, while the USD/JPY pair fell 0.4 percent.
