Everyone has an opinion: the Tesla Cybertruck is an extraordinary vehicle. Its angular design, bulletproof feature, and the fact that it looks like it has been pulled from a post-apocalyptic movie set it apart from its competitors. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the purpose of this design is exactly that.
Last month, on 'The Joe Rogan Experience' podcast, Musk mentioned that the Cybertruck was not designed to shock people; the main goal was to redefine the limits of what a truck can be. “I wanted it to look really different,” Musk said, explaining that the design of the box-shaped stainless steel structure was not only aesthetic but also stemmed from physical requirements.
Emphasizing that traditional trucks are made from shaped steel panels, Musk explained the reason for using ultra-hard stainless steel in the Cybertruck: “The panels cannot simply be stamped. It breaks the press.” That’s why the design is flat and angular. This is not just a visual expression but also a structural necessity.
Musk did not only focus on appearance; he wanted the Cybertruck to offer “unique functionalities.” This vehicle, which is bulletproof, is, as Musk jokingly put it, ideal for a post-apocalyptic scenario. “If the apocalypse happens, you’re going to need a bulletproof truck,” he said.
In terms of performance, Musk stated that the Cybertruck can tow more than a Ford F-350 diesel engine and accelerate faster than a Porsche 911. “It can cover a quarter-mile distance faster than a 911 while towing a Porsche 911,” he said. He explained this extraordinary performance with a metaphor: “It’s like a cheetah running with an elephant.”
Musk also explained why the design of the Cybertruck looks like it has jumped out of a science fiction film. He recalled a time when his son asked, “Why does the world look like it’s from 2015?” This criticism stuck with him. He wants Tesla’s vehicles to reflect the future. “The future should look like the future,” he said.
Musk delivered a message stating that the Cybertruck does not follow traditional design trends or aesthetics. “Trucks should be masculine. They should look like a man,” he said. From a visual toughness perspective, “bulletproof is maximum masculinity.”
Tesla continuously develops and improves this vehicle while keeping the core concept unchanged: to create a product that is future-oriented, functional, and looks like nothing else on the road.
As Musk clearly stated, “This is alien technology.”
