Unexpected Increase in Taiwan's Export Orders

Taiwan’s export orders in September showed a 30.5% increase compared to the same period last year, reaching 70.22 billion dollars. This surge stands out as a significant development reflecting global technology demand.

Taiwan is home to the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer TSMC and other technology companies, making its export orders regarded as an indicator of the global technology sector. A 17.8% increase was expected for the previous month, but performance exceeded this expectation significantly.

In September, a 20% general tariff was imposed on Taiwan’s exports during the presidency of Donald Trump. The Taiwan government stated that this is a temporary measure and continues negotiations with the United States for more reasonable rates.

Uncertainties in global trade policies and geopolitical risks are among the factors affecting trade momentum. However, the expansion of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing sectors with new implementations continues to provide positive support to orders.

As the year-end holiday season approaches, the fourth quarter is generally considered a high season. A record-breaking full-year order volume is anticipated this year.

For the next month, it is projected that Taiwan's export orders will increase by 23.7% to 27.3% compared to the previous year. According to other data from September, orders for telecommunications products increased by 33.1%, while orders for electronic products saw a 45.9% rise.

There was an 11.6% increase in orders from China. In the previous month of September, this figure had contracted by 0.7%. Orders from the United States rose by 40.2%, while orders from Europe increased by 16.9%, and those from Japan went up by 22.8%.
