The Chairman of the Capital Markets Board (SPK) İbrahim Ömer Gönül made important statements during the protocol ceremony held with the Turkey Bar Association (TBB) in recent days. This collaboration stands out as a step taken to strengthen the legal infrastructure of capital markets.
In his speech, Gönül emphasized the critical importance of lawyers in the markets by stating, "The role of law and the legal profession in capital markets is distinct." He noted that the contribution of lawyers is vital in many areas, from public offering processes to mergers and acquisitions, and he expressed that the law must deepen with financial literacy.
Stating that capital markets have undergone a rapid transformation in recent years and that digitalization has deepened legal evaluations, Gönül said, “In addition to being familiar with the legislation, it has become essential for lawyers to understand financial concepts.” The increase in lawyers’ level of financial literacy will not only protect investors' rights and prevent disputes but also play an effective role in establishing market discipline.
In addition to the steps taken today, the designation of May 22 as "Financial Literacy Day" by Presidential Decree is significant. Furthermore, SPK has been assigned the national coordination task for the events of “Global Money Week” organized by the OECD International Network for Financial Education. Gönül stated that these efforts aim to raise the financial awareness level of society.
With the signed protocol, it is aimed to strengthen the knowledge base of lawyers in capital markets and to increase joint training and awareness-raising activities. Gönül emphasized that this collaboration is not a special gain but rather an important investment in the future of our country's capital markets.
