According to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi Jinping held a teleconference with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, discussing the development of China-Russia relations and making joint assessments on the global situation.
Pointing to the increasing international upheaval since the beginning of the year, Xi stated, "As permanent members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, we, as China and Russia, have a responsibility to promote equality and justice in the international community. We must work together to uphold the UN-centered international system and the fundamental principles of international law."
President Xi expressed his readiness to chart a new roadmap for China-Russia relations and emphasized that the two sides needed to ensure the sustainable development of their relations through deep strategic coordination.
Putin, in light of the increasingly complex international situation, expressed their willingness to strengthen cooperation with China on multilateral platforms such as the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and BRICS.
Amid increasing geopolitical tensions following the Ukraine War, China has entered a closer cooperation process with Russia to maintain a balanced position against the US. Both leaders outlined their plans to visit each other to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
This aims to deepen the relations between China and Russia, while curiosity remains about how the situation may be influenced by the Trump administration in the US.
President Trump, in a statement made in March 2025, noted that the development of ties between China and Russia was primarily a result of past US policies, warning that this situation could threaten global balance.
