Rivian Automotive (RIVN) has decided to recall a total of 19,641 R1S and R1T electric vehicles due to an issue identified in the rear suspension system. This recall is specifically related to the improper installation of the rear toe links. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Rivian will offer free repair services to vehicle owners regarding this issue.
According to NHTSA's statement, some vehicles may have had their rear toe link bolts improperly assembled during previous service operations. This situation could lead to the toe link connection separating over time while the vehicle is in motion. Such separation increases the risk of an accident without prior warning, highlighting the seriousness of the incident. Rivian reported only a minor injury incident related to this issue.
The recall involves specific R1T and R1S vehicles produced between the 2022 and 2025 model years. It was determined that the affected vehicles were not reassembled according to design standards during past service operations. Rivian announced that the start date for these changes is April 1, 2022, and an updated procedure will be implemented on March 10, 2025.
To determine which vehicles are affected by this recall, service records will be used. Vehicles not included in the recall either did not undergo such service operations or were repaired according to the updated procedures.
