In Ordu, located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, there has been a noticeable increase in activity at fish sales points in recent days. According to local fishermen, the significantly lower-than-expected levels of kolhrabi catch have resulted in exorbitant prices at the stalls.

While a recent rise in the anchovy catch has brought smiles to the faces of regional fishermen, the decline in the kolhrabi catch has become a serious cause for concern. Despite the presence of some kolhrabi in the stalls since the start of the fishing season, this situation has also led to high prices.

Fishermen indicate that due to the low quantity of kolhrabi, prices range between 160 TL and 200 TL. Especially this season, the lower-than-expected kolhrabi catch has led to abnormal price increases. Although anchovy is a more common type of fish, the scarcity of kolhrabi is putting consumers in a difficult position.

This year, fishermen are feeling the effects of climate change alongside the challenges faced in kolhrabi catching. It is clear that temperature fluctuations in the waters of the Black Sea and the imbalances in the marine ecosystem have adversely affected the available fish stocks.

Experts emphasize that consumers should be cautious when buying kolhrabi, as high prices may be indicative of poor quality. Additionally, fishermen state that finding kolhrabi this season is difficult, predicting that prices may rise further in the coming weeks.

Local municipalities and seafood cooperatives continue to work on sustainable fishing methods to support fishermen. This situation is promising for the future of valuable seafood products such as both anchovy and kolhrabi.
