OpenAI's New Move

OpenAI announced on Tuesday the launch of its own web browser, Atlas. This development positions the ChatGPT creator in direct competition with Google, which has more users for answering questions using artificial intelligence.

Not only does it open the door for online searches, but it also seems possible for OpenAI to attract more internet traffic, thereby increasing revenue generated from digital advertising. The company mentioned that ChatGPT currently has over 800 million users, although most of these users are receiving the service for free. The San Francisco-based company is struggling to generate revenue and is exploring ways to achieve profitability.

Competing with Chrome

OpenAI's browser comes after a few months ago when one of its executives stated an interest in acquiring Google's dominant browser Chrome if a federal judge conditioned its sale. However, last month, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta denied a request from the U.S. Department of Justice to demand the sale of Chrome in its antitrust case. Mehta believed that advancements in the artificial intelligence industry were already shaping the competitive landscape.

OpenAI's Atlas browser is expected to be a tough competitor against Chrome, which has approximately 3 billion users worldwide. Google continues to grow its user base by adding some AI features from its Gemini technology. The significant success of Chrome could provide OpenAI with a roadmap for entering the browser market. When Google launched Chrome in 2008, Microsoft's Internet Explorer was so dominant that few believed a new browser could pose a serious threat.

New Faces in the Browser Market

However, Chrome quickly gained major success by loading web pages faster than Internet Explorer and capturing users' attention. These developments led Microsoft to abandon Internet Explorer and release its similar-functioning Edge browser. Additionally, another smaller AI startup, Perplexity, introduced its own Comet browser earlier this year and was also interested in acquiring Chrome. However, because of Mehta's unwillingness to push for Google's breakup, this initiative remained unfruitful.
