The Trump administration is evaluating the possibility of allowing Nvidia's H200 artificial intelligence chips to be sold to China. This situation is related to recent internal discussions, according to a Bloomberg report based on sources familiar with the matter.
So far, no definitive decision has been made regarding the shipment of H200 chips to China. It is noted that these discussions may remain at the internal deliberation level. The H200 chips offer a highly capable technology, although they are not more advanced than Nvidia's flagship Blackwell series.
The evaluations regarding the export of these chips are seen as a significant deviation from the Trump administration's previously publicly stated stance on chip export controls, and this situation may provoke reactions from anti-China circles in Washington. Approval would significantly ease the trade restrictions aimed at limiting China's artificial intelligence capabilities.
On the other hand, President Donald Trump had previously mentioned that he could discuss the export of Nvidia's most advanced chips with Chinese leader Xi Jinping; however, this issue did not come up in recent talks. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the export of the current Blackwell series chips could be possible to China since they are no longer considered cutting-edge technology. It is anticipated that this situation could become feasible within 1-2 years.
