NextEra Energy and Alphabet's Google have signed an energy supply agreement for the reinstatement of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa. After years of stagnation, the nuclear energy sector is experiencing a revival driven by the demand for clean energy sources to power data centers of large tech companies.

The Duane Arnold Energy Center, with an approximate capacity of 600 megawatts, was shut down in 2020 after 45 years of operation. This would mark a first in the United States for a completely shut down nuclear reactor to be restarted; however, Duane Arnold is on track to become one of three plants nationwide attempting to reopen.

Located in the Palo region of Iowa, the Duane Arnold Energy Center is the only nuclear plant in the state and, according to a statement from NextEra, is expected to reopen by the first quarter of 2029.
