NextEra Energy and Alphabet’s owned Google have signed an energy supply agreement for the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Plant in Iowa. This agreement will help bring the nuclear plant back online.
After years of stagnation, the nuclear energy industry is experiencing a significant revival. This situation is driven by the search for clean energy sources by large technology companies to power their data centers.
The Duane Arnold Energy Center, with a capacity of approximately 600 megawatts, was shut down in 2020 after 45 years of operation. No fully shut down U.S. nuclear reactor has been brought back online, but Duane Arnold is among the three facilities targeted for reopening.
Located in Palo, Iowa, the Duane Arnold Energy Center is the only nuclear power plant in the state, and NextEra expects the plant to reopen in the first quarter of 2029.
