New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) board has approved the purchase of new subway cars worth a total of $1.507 billion. This significant investment will be funded as part of the $68 billion capital plan covering the period from 2025 to 2029. Production of the new cars is planned to begin by fall 2028, with all deliveries expected to be completed by 2030.
By 2030, a total of 378 new cars will be added to the New York subway fleet. The new cars, designated as the R268 model, will replace the existing R68 and R68A series, which have reached the end of their service life. The design of this new model has been developed to be compatible with the previously introduced R211 fleet.
The design of the new subway cars includes various features that prioritize passenger safety. Security cameras integrated inside the cars have been added to enhance passenger safety. Additionally, wheelchair-accessible seats will facilitate transportation for individuals with disabilities. Improved lighting systems have been designed to enhance passenger comfort, while clearer directional signage will make journeys even easier.
With this investment, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority aims to improve the quality of subway services and provide passengers with a safer transportation experience. Strengthening and modernizing the transportation infrastructure in the city is considered an important step in urban transportation. These investments aim to provide integrated transportation solutions that are suitable for New York's crowded and dynamic environment, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency in public transportation.
