Meta has overcome an existential threat to its business model. A judge ruled that the tech giant is not a monopoly in the social media space, stating that the company will not be forced to separate popular applications like Instagram and WhatsApp.
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg announced his decision last Tuesday, following the completion of a historic antitrust case at the end of May. This ruling comes after two separate decisions declaring Google an illegal monopoly in search and online advertising, applying more regulatory pressure on the tech sector.
Boasberg noted that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) continued to argue that Meta has competed with its oldest rivals over the last decade and maintained a monopoly position among that small group. However, the judge stated, “Even if Meta had monopoly power in the past, the agency must show that this power still exists.” Today's ruling indicates that the FTC failed to do so.
