The London Stock Exchange's flagship index, FTSE 100, is preparing to record its strongest annual performance in the last 16 years, approaching record levels in the final trading days of 2025. On a day with an early close, the index exhibited a flat trend after reaching its historic peak in the previous session, while the mid-cap FTSE 250 index declined by 0.3%.
Due to the New Year holiday, the trading volume on the London Stock Exchange, which will close at 15:30 Turkish time, continues to remain at a significantly low level. After a prolonged period of weak performance, the FTSE 100 is experiencing a remarkable rise as of 2025, fueled by potential interest rate cuts from the Bank of England and a recovery in finance and mining stocks.
In this context, the FTSE 100 index has gained over 21% throughout the year, marking its fifth consecutive annual increase. This performance will be recorded as the strongest surge seen since 2009. For comparison, during the same period, the STOXX 600 index representing Europe increased by 16.6%, while the S&P 500 index of the U.S. rose by 17.2%.
