Impact of Cryptocurrency Assets on Energy Consumption

In recent years, the proliferation of cryptocurrency assets has significantly increased energy demand due to the rise in cryptocurrency transactions conducted in data centers. At the same time, the continuous data processing requirements of artificial intelligence systems further intensify the use of these centers, leading to profound effects on global energy consumption.

IAEE's Perspective

At the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) Middle East and Central Asia (MECA) Conference, IAEE Board Member Kardelen Afrodit Adsal noted that the high demand for cryptocurrency mining is increasing the requirements for data centers. Adsal emphasized, "The rising popularity of cryptocurrency assets is radically changing both energy policies and international cooperation. Countries that are dependent on energy are becoming more vulnerable due to this situation."

Carbon Neutral Goals and Cryptocurrency Asset Management

Adsal stated that the annual energy consumption of cryptocurrencies is expressed as 172 million terawatt-hours. In this context, she highlighted the need for regions such as Europe and Turkey to align cryptocurrency usage with balanced and standards-compliant structures in line with their carbon neutral targets. If current trends continue, energy consumption from cryptocurrency assets is expected to nearly double by 2030, which could seriously impact energy balances.

Europe's Renewable Energy Strategy

The European Union promotes the use of renewable energy in data centers. Adsal provided information saying, "The continuously evolving regulations and standards are currently at the most advanced level in Europe. This process is progressing through data centers that consume the most energy from cryptocurrency assets, and certain standards are being adhered to. The energy demand here is primarily met from renewable sources." She also noted that efforts to increase the energy efficiency of cooling systems in data centers are also a priority.

In conclusion, energy consumption in cryptocurrency mining is expected to double by 2030. It is anticipated that a significant portion of this increase will originate from data centers. Strategies such as using more energy-efficient equipment in data centers and reducing the cooling energy needs could make this increase manageable.
