Black Sea Hamsi Influx: Return with 721 Tons of Fish!

In the Akçakoca district of Düzce, fishermen have achieved significant success in hamsi fishing, benefiting from the bounty of the Black Sea. With the cooling temperatures, the density of hamsi delighted local fishermen and sea enthusiasts. Between October 15 and 24, 2025, a total of 721 tons of hamsi were caught at the Akçakoca harbor.

With the increase in the amount of hamsi caught, it became inevitable to enhance inspections. A strict monitoring system has been implemented to detect hamsi caught below the specified size in local fishing practices. Penal measures have been applied against fishermen who do not comply with the regulations, and illegally obtained hamsi have been seized.

These types of practices are of critical importance for preventing the degradation of the hamsi population and ensuring sustainable marine fishing. The Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Esra Uzun, visited Akçakoca to emphasize her approach to the issue and the importance of the inspection process. Uzun highlighted the sustainability of marine resources, stressing that this wealth should benefit not only for economic gain but also for future generations.

Although the Black Sea is known for its rich diversity of life, it is under threats such as overfishing, climate change, and pollution. Therefore, the sustainability of important species like hamsi necessitates measures that will support the local economy and maintain ecosystem balance. It is expected that the inspections carried out in Akçakoca will serve as an example for maintaining order in Turkey's marine fishing in general.
