Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that significant progress has been made in the suspended negotiations with the United States following the provocative advertisement by the Ontario provincial government regarding tariffs.

Carney's Statements

According to CBC News, Carney responded to reporters' questions at the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Carney stated, "In any complex, high-risk negotiation, unexpected developments can occur, and in such situations, you must maintain your composure. There is no benefit in being upset; emotions do not take you far," he said.

Ontario Provincial Government's Advertisement

While Carney refrained from commenting on the advertisement created by Ontario, he emphasized that the central government is the one managing the negotiations. He also expressed that he is always ready to meet with Trump.

Trump's Announcement and Tariffs

President Donald Trump announced that the trade talks were suspended due to Canada using a "fake" advertisement that negatively portrayed former U.S. President Ronald Reagan's tariffs. Following this situation, the U.S. began imposing a 35 percent tariff on Canadian products as of August 1.
