In Japan, household spending has shown an increase for the fourth consecutive month. This ongoing rise demonstrates resilience against inflation during a period when the Bank of Japan is reconsidering its interest rate hike decisions.
According to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Tuesday, inflation-adjusted household spending recorded a 2.3 percent increase in August compared to the same period last year. This increase is observed to be significantly influenced by transportation and entertainment expenses.
This data outpaced economists' median forecast of a 1.2 percent rise. Consumption accounts for more than half of Japan’s economic output and stands out as a critical indicator for assessing the economy's resilience against rising living costs.
During a period when increased tariffs from the U.S. have negatively impacted exports, the Japanese economy managed to record growth for five consecutive quarters up to the second quarter of the year. This situation illustrates the strength of the Japanese economy against challenging conditions.
