InterDigital Initiates Legal Battle with Amazon

InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a company engaged in research and development of mobile, video, and artificial intelligence technologies, announced that it has initiated legal proceedings against Amazon for intellectual property infringement.

The case centers around patents related to video content compression and the use of high dynamic range (HDR) technology to enhance image quality. Amazon is accused of infringing InterDigital’s intellectual property through devices such as FireTV and Kindle, as well as services like Prime Video.

The lawsuits have been filed in locations including the Delaware Federal District Court in the United States, the Rio de Janeiro State Court in Brazil, the Munich District Court in Germany, and the Unified Patent Court’s Mannheim Local Division.

InterDigital Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt stated, “Our goal has always been to sign licensing agreements through amicable negotiations, but Amazon’s decision to sue InterDigital this year demonstrates that they prefer litigation over negotiation.” He added, “The innovations involved in this lawsuit show the extensive scope of our research aimed at enabling Amazon to provide high-quality content to consumers worldwide. We are committed to receiving fair compensation for our groundbreaking research so that we can continue to invest in the next generation of technology.”
