Intel Corp caught attention by exceeding Wall Street expectations with its quarterly results announced on Thursday. Support from the U.S. government and new investments from Nvidia and SoftBank provided significant contributions during a time when the company is trying to strengthen its position in the semiconductor industry.
The company announced that its adjusted earnings per share for the third quarter were 23 cents, surpassing analysts' estimate of 1 cent. Revenue increased by 3% to reach $13.7 billion, also above expectations.
Intel projects its fourth-quarter revenue to be between $12.8 billion and $13.8 billion, with adjusted earnings expected to be 8 cents per share, consistent with consensus. The stock gained approximately 6% in after-hours trading. Since the last financial report, the company’s shares have risen by about 64%, outperforming the overall market and the semiconductor sector's growth.
The company is undergoing a transformation process after years of production delays and losses in market share to competitors like AMD and Nvidia. During this quarter, as part of a $8.9 billion package to support domestic semiconductor production, it received $5.7 billion in funding from the U.S. government.
Nvidia and SoftBank together contributed $7 billion in investments to Intel stock. The company's Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner noted that this situation increased operational flexibility and reflected confidence in the company’s role in the chip ecosystem.
The company also added $5.2 billion to its cash reserves by selling a 51% stake in its programmable chip unit Altera and announced that demand in core markets is outstripping supply.
The CEO of the company, Lip-Bu Tan, stated that artificial intelligence has created new computer demand and that Intel's x86 processors, specialized accelerators, and foundry services present increased opportunities. These results came after deep cost cuts that have reduced Intel's workforce by more than 20% since last year.
