Approximately 850,000 drivers have come together to file a significant lawsuit, claiming they were misled about the environmental performance of their vehicles. This class action lawsuit has the potential to become the largest consumer case in UK history.
Drivers allege that automobile manufacturers, through software installed in vehicles, temporarily reduced emissions when subjected to emission tests, making it appear as though they met European Union standards. However, it is stated that when these vehicles return to their normal performance outside of test conditions, they emit particulate matter well above legal limits.
Currently, major automobile manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Renault, Nissan, and Peugeot/Citroen are facing this class action lawsuit. However, it is anticipated that in later stages of the lawsuit, a total of 14 brands and 1.6 million drivers may be included in the scope of this case.
The concerned automobile manufacturers describe the allegations as "baseless" and deny them. The hearings at the London High Court are expected to last approximately three months, with a final ruling anticipated to be announced in the middle of next year.
