Hujing Digital Media & Entertainment Group, as a subsidiary of Alibaba Group Holding Limited, is taking significant steps to accelerate its global talent strategy. The company held the "2025 North America Talent Cooperation Tour" in Los Angeles, bringing together young Chinese directors, screenwriters, and producers.
At the heart of this event are the Hina International Young Directors Program and the ChunM Talent Program. This event marks the official launch of talent development efforts, featuring participation from 35 young creators who graduated from prestigious schools such as USC, UCLA, American Film Institute, Chapman University, Columbia University, and NYU.
Most of them continue to work in film directing, screenwriting, or production in the U.S. after graduation and have won awards at international festivals such as Cannes and Los Angeles Film Festival.
Prominent industry figures including Jerry Li, President of Damai Entertainment, Yvonne Liu, Vice President of Youku, and Eric Lin participated in the talks at the event. These leaders shared insights on cinema and content creation with North America-based creatives. The event was moderated by Joe Zheng, who serves as an International Development Consultant for the Hina International Young Directors Program and is an academic with degrees from Beijing Film Academy and USC.
Jerry Li noted that the summit is designed to attract young creators with an international perspective, aiming to provide an encouraging environment for these youth to showcase their commercial and technical skills in the Chinese market. The goal is to accelerate the industrialization of Chinese cinema and produce content with international awareness.
Li also emphasized that the Hina International Young Directors Program offers services in three main areas to support young directors: directing agency services, opportunities to work as a second team leader on significant projects, and support for original intellectual property projects. As of September 2025, the program has successfully incorporated 67 young directors from film schools around the world.
Yvonne Liu highlighted the evolution of the Chinese film and TV market, noting that despite the rise of short-form content, Youku continues to invest 90% in long-form series. Liu stated that viewers in the Chinese market are seeking richer narratives and emotional depth, stressing the need for a proactive ecosystem to develop talent.
The ChunM Talent Program is developing projects to support writers and aims to contribute to the transformation of concepts into production through events like the "ChunM Tour." Liu expressed hope that the "ChunM Talent Program" will take root in Hollywood.
Joe Zheng explained that some Chinese creatives who have received education abroad face challenges in adapting their talents for different markets. He emphasized that young creators need to continuously evolve in content production, keeping in mind the needs and preferences of diverse audiences.
