France's Minister of Defense Sebastien Lecornu announced on France 2 television that he has resigned from his position as Prime Minister. Lecornu expressed concerns about the ongoing government crisis and the political stability of France.
Lecornu stated that a new Prime Minister could be appointed within 48 hours. He used the phrase, “The French people want our politicians to come together and reach an agreement,” emphasizing that President Emmanuel Macron would lead this process.
Recalling the elections held a year ago, Lecornu noted that the fragmented structure in Parliament reflects the differences existing in society. He insisted that the new government should not focus on preparations for the 2027 presidential elections.
Lecornu highlighted the significance of the discussions regarding the 2026 budget proposal that will be submitted to Parliament on October 13, stating that it is critical for the current government to gain a vote of confidence during this transition period. He mentioned that all political forces, except for LFI (La France Insoumise) and RN (Rassemblement National), need to come together for the budget discussions.
Discussions related to the budget negotiations, which led to the government falling before completing its 3-month term, are ongoing in France. The deadlock during the 2025 budget negotiations has further increased the government's instability.
Recalling that Macron's government led by François Bayrou, appointed as Prime Minister on December 13, 2024, faced similar issues, Lecornu emphasized the need for efforts to address the country's debt problems and create promising budgets.
