In recent times, with the increasing volatility of cryptocurrencies, investors are turning their attention to Ethereum (ETH) in the year 2026. Ethereum developers are solidifying investor confidence by outlining a series of important plans for 2026. During the All Core Developers Execution meeting held on Thursday, the next major update for the Ethereum network was named Hegota.
This update will be implemented in accordance with the regular hard fork schedule set for 2026. Hegota will be carried out immediately after the Glamsterdam update, and the name of the update was formed by combining the names of the Bogota upgrade in the execution layer and Heze in the consensus layer. Developers stated that the details of the main Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) within Hegota will be clarified in February.
Ethereum will transition to a twice-a-year update schedule with the Pectra and Fusaka updates it will implement in 2025. This strategy aims for more predictable and regular improvements instead of large and rare updates. According to the current schedule, the Glamsterdam update is expected to roll out in the first half of 2026, while the Hegota update is anticipated to be implemented in the second half of the year.
Although the update for Hegota is still in its early stages, it provides clues regarding important topics in the developers' roadmap. In particular, Verkle Trees emerge as an important step toward the full transition to a stateless client architecture. Additionally, state expiry related to clearing past data and improvements in the execution layer are also on the agenda. Meanwhile, the Glamsterdam update aims to enhance Layer 1 efficiency and reduce the risks of centralization in block production.
Developers are also working on proposals such as block-level access lists and rebalancing gas fees. However, it is expected that more complex changes that do not fit the timeline will be deferred to the Hegota update. Thus, the announcement of Hegota is considered a significant milestone in the development process of Ethereum post-2026, alongside its previous major updates, The Merge, The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge.
