Nazif's Conviction and Charges

Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah found former Malaysian Prime Minister Nazif Razak guilty of 4 counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering.

1MDB Case and Allegations

The decision relates to accusations involving approximately 2.2 billion ringgit (about 544 million dollars) linked to 1MDB, discussed in 2018. 1MDB, founded by Nazif Razak in 2009, came under scrutiny for corruption allegations in 2015. It is estimated that between 4.5 and 7 billion dollars worth of funds have been embezzled from this fund.

Nazif's Future and Political Impact

Currently imprisoned on other charges, Nazif Razak continuously denies all allegations. The conviction is said to significantly reduce Nazif's chances of returning to the political scene. The United Malays National Organisation is campaigning for Nazif's release, while leaders of the Democratic Action Party coalition state they will reconsider their support.

2028 Elections and Political Situation

Under normal circumstances, elections in Malaysia are not expected to occur until early 2028. Nazif will not be eligible to run for political office for five years after his release from prison. He has been incarcerated on charges related to 1MDB since losing power in 2018, and following a royal intervention at the beginning of 2024, his sentence was halved to six years, with his release expected in 2028.
