Erdoğan's Statements on F-35

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made significant statements regarding U.S. relations, Turkey's energy policy, and geopolitical developments in written responses to questions from Bloomberg. Turkey continues its efforts to mend the strained bilateral relations that were affected by the acquisition of the Russian air defense system S-400 nearly a decade ago. Erdoğan stated that during this process, Turkey aims to strengthen its relations with NATO as well as reshape its ties with trade partner Russia.

Injustices Regarding F-35

Erdoğan expressed during his meeting with Trump in September that they discussed Turkey's re-entry into the F-35 program and emphasized that the delivery of F-35 jets is important for NATO security. He added, "The decision to remove Turkey from the F-35 program is unjust," noting that this situation creates a strategic partnership for both Turkey and the U.S.

S-400 Missiles and Improving Relations

According to Bloomberg, Turkey is seeking to return the S-400 systems purchased from Russia. Erdoğan has brought up this issue in meetings with Vladimir Putin. U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack mentioned that Turkey may be nearing a solution to dispose of the S-400s, and this resolution could be achieved within the next four to six months.

Strategic Steps in Energy

Turkey is also planning to purchase F-16 Block 70 aircraft from the U.S.. Erdoğan stated, "We expect the terms of the agreement to be in line with the spirit of alliance," citing the example of the Eurofighter jet acquisition. He highlighted that Turkey has increased its purchases of LNG from U.S. sources as part of its efforts to enhance energy security.

Regional Issues and Turkey's Stance

Erdoğan indicated that they are trying to balance the strained relations affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. Ankara continues its arms trade with Kiev while rejecting sanctions against Russia. Additionally, Turkey plays an important mediating role in the ceasefire process between Israel and Hamas.
