The People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) conducted the "Justice Mission 2025" exercise in the northern, southwestern, southeastern, and eastern regions of the Taiwan Strait. Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, announced that the exercise was held with the participation of ground, air, naval, and rocket forces.
The exercise included destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, bomber aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The main objectives of the exercise included air-naval combat preparation patrols, strategic pressure, and simulation attacks related to deterrence targets. Notably, attacks on maritime targets using live ammunition stood out.
Colonel Shi stated that the exercise would serve as a clear warning to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence, and they regard it as a legitimate action to safeguard China's national unity.
The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense announced the initiation of an "Emergency Response Exercise" simultaneously with the military exercise. The announcement stated, "We condemn China's provocations. Our armed forces are on alert to protect the people of Taiwan."
This exercise took place following the approval of approximately $11 billion in arms sales to Taiwan by the United States on December 17. The agreement represents the largest arms sale to Taiwan.
The China-Taiwan dispute dates back to the post-World War II era. The structure known as the Republic of China is believed to have been established by members of the Koumintang who settled in Taiwan in 1949. Since then, Taiwan has operated as a de facto independent administration, resisting the People's Republic of China's demands for reunification.
The Beijing administration has indicated that it will increase military pressure on Taiwan and will not hesitate to use force if necessary.
