People's Liberation Army (PLA) conducted the "Justice Mission 2025" exercise in the northern, southwestern, southeastern, and eastern regions of the Taiwan Strait. Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, stated that the exercise was conducted with the participation of ground, air, naval, and rocket forces.
The exercise involved destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The main objectives of the exercise included air-naval combat readiness patrols, strategic pressure, and simulated attacks on deterrence-related targets. Notably, attacks on naval targets using live ammunition stood out.
Colonel Shi indicated that the exercise would serve as a clear warning to the separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence and that they viewed it as a legitimate action to safeguard China's national unity.
The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense announced the initiation of an "Urgent Response Drill" simultaneously with the exercise. The statement said, "We condemn China's provocations. Our armed forces are on alert to protect the people of Taiwan."
This exercise took place following the approval of approximately 11 billion dollars in arms sales to Taiwan by the United States on December 17. This agreement constitutes the largest arms sale to Taiwan.
The China-Taiwan dispute dates back to the post-World War II era. The structure known as the Republic of China is believed to have been established by members of the Koumintang who settled in Taiwan in 1949. Since then, Taiwan has effectively presented an independent administration, opposing the People's Republic of China's demands for reunification.
The Beijing administration has been increasing military pressure on Taiwan and has stated that it will not hesitate to use force if necessary.
