Caroline Pham, Chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has approved discussions to launch leveraged spot crypto trading with regulated exchanges. This announcement opens the doors to a new era for U.S. crypto markets and attracts the attention of investors.

In a post on the social media platform X, Pham stated that the CFTC is in talks with registered platforms about plans to launch new products involving margin, leverage, and financing in the trading of digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. This situation could enable investors to access opportunities that were previously available only on offshore exchanges under CFTC oversight while existing laws are reviewed.

This development stands out as a significant change in U.S. policies towards the cryptocurrency market. Instead of waiting for new legislation, the CFTC is using the regulations contained in the existing Commodity Exchange Act to pave the way for leveraged spot transactions. As a result, investors will have the opportunity to open a $5,000 position with just a $1,000 margin using 5x leverage.

Pham, who stands alone in the decision-making process, holds significant influence in determining the direction of the CFTC. The government shutdown is delaying the approval process for other commission members, and there have been claims regarding Pham transitioning to a crypto payment company called MoonPay. However, there has been no official statement from Pham regarding this matter.

In September, a joint guidance published by the CFTC and SEC clearly stated that it is not prohibited for registered exchanges to trade spot commodity products. According to Alexander Blume, CEO of Two Prime Digital Assets, these developments could facilitate the spot trading of digital assets on major U.S. exchanges, thereby accelerating mainstream adoption.

Investors should carefully monitor the opportunities presented by these new regulations and the resulting market dynamics. They need to balance the advantages and risks of leveraged trading to formulate their strategies.
