Bitcoin's Open Interest Reached $50 Billion

Recently, the drop of Bitcoin price below the $100,000 mark has created significant concern among investors, while this situation is also being considered a major opportunity. Deribit, one of the leading platforms in the crypto derivatives markets, reported that the open positions in Bitcoin (BTC) options reached an all-time high of $50.27 billion.

According to Deribit data, the number of active Bitcoin options contracts has risen to 453,820. This indicates that investors continue to participate despite price fluctuations in the markets. Deribit CEO Luuk Strijers stated, “Despite the price pressure, the open position in options has reached an all-time high both in terms of contracts and dollar value. This reflects that participation in the market is ongoing and expanding.”

Particularly, put options at the $100,000 level have received significant interest. The open position at this level is reported to be around $2 billion. It appears that investors are developing hedging strategies against the possibility of Bitcoin price falling below this threshold. Strijers added, “The new record draws attention to the intense put positions around $100,000. This indicates that active downward risk hedging strategies are being implemented in the market.”

While Deribit data shows that investors are generally acting cautiously, it also reveals their efforts to seize upward opportunities. Increased call (buy) option activity at price levels of $120,000 and above indicates that some investors are positioning themselves in anticipation of volatility increases or sudden price rises. This clearly demonstrates that the Bitcoin options market is being actively utilized against both declines and rises, highlighting that investors prioritize risk management in an uncertain environment.
