Apple has announced a new feature that will allow iPhone users to store their US passports digitally. This innovation increases the role of mobile devices in identity verification processes, enabling users to manage important documents more securely.
The new digital identity feature prioritizes security and private data protection. Apple stated that the digital passport is designed in accordance with REAL ID standards, allowing users to carry out age and identity verification processes at airports, applications, websites, and stores.
The digital passport feature will be limited to US passports in its initial phase. Users will need to have the iOS 26 operating system to benefit from this innovation. iOS 26 is designed to be compatible with iPhone 11 and newer models.
Apple plans to integrate digital passport technology with different countries over time. Currently, official ID support in the Apple Wallet application is only available in 12 US states and Puerto Rico, which addresses approximately one-third of US driver's license holders.
This innovation was introduced at the Money20/20 USA conference held in Las Vegas, USA. Apple's move is seen as an indicator of its global passport integration goals.
