In the Second Round Presidential Election held on Sunday, with 99% of the votes counted, Antonio Jose Seguro received 66.7% of the votes, while Ventura was left with 33.33%. The new president expressed in his speech shortly after the election victory, “The message given today by the Portuguese people touches me and makes me proud of our nation, showing our commitment to freedom, democracy, and the future of our country.”
The outgoing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa made a phone call to congratulate Seguro. The presidential office announced that De Sousa would receive Seguro, who will assume office on March 9, at the Belem Palace. They stated that they would ensure the necessary coordination for a smooth transition process.
European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Seguro's victory in a social media post. Leyen stated, “I congratulate you on being elected President of Portugal. Portugal has demonstrated strong democratic resilience despite the storms.”
