New Supercomputers from AMD and DOE

AMD and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) have announced two new supercomputers designed with high-performance technology at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). These projects are named Lux AI Supercomputer and Discovery Supercomputer and aim to reinforce America's leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).

Lux and Discovery are designed as the flagship supercomputers of the DOE, with the goal of providing groundbreaking advancements in science, energy, and national security. These systems serve as direct supporters of the U.S. AI Action Plan, accelerating AI-enabled scientific research and strengthening national competitiveness.

AMD, in collaboration with the government, ORNL, and industry partners, will provide advanced computing platforms to national researchers, agencies, and innovators to help solve urgent issues they face in energy, health, and national security. The Lux and Discovery systems are expected to represent a total of $1 billion in private and public funding investment.

Lux AI Supercomputer: The First AI Factory for Science

The Lux AI supercomputer has been developed in collaboration with ORNL, AMD, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and HPE and is supported by AMD Instinct™ MI355X GPU, AMD EPYC™ CPU, and AMD Pensando™ advanced networking technologies. When operational in early 2026, it will be the first AI factory specifically designed for science in the United States.

The Discovery supercomputer will be powered by an innovative architecture, including AMD EPYC series processors and AMD Instinct™ MI430X GPU. These systems are designed for the training, simulation, and deployment of AI models in domestic systems to ensure national data security.

Discovery: A New Breakthrough in Scientific Computing

Discovery is specifically designed for AI and science and adopts the "Everywhere Bandwidth" approach to enhance efficiency. Scheduled to be operational at ORNL in 2028, Discovery aims to sustain the U.S. leadership in HPC and AI. This system will provide groundbreaking advancements in many areas including energy, biology, advanced materials, and manufacturing innovation.

In conclusion, AMD is continuing to accelerate the foundations of America's science and innovation with Lux and Discovery. These projects represent a critical step in advancing America's goals in AI and science, showcasing the best examples of public and private partnerships.
