Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) recently announced that its corporate cuts have most significantly impacted engineering positions. Approximately 40% of the total 4,700 positions affected were engineering roles, which have been canceled in Washington, New York, New Jersey, and California.

These cuts are part of a broader plan that the company announced to streamline its white-collar workforce and redirect resources toward priority projects in artificial intelligence. In light of the more than 14,000 corporate layoffs announced in October, Mid-Level Software Engineers (SDE II) experienced a higher rate of cuts.

CEO Andy Jassy and HR Chief Beth Galetti indicated that among the goals of these measures is to reduce layers and speed up decision-making processes. Amazon stated that it will continue to hire in strategic areas.

Analysts point out that this restructuring is not yet complete; further cuts are reported to potentially occur in January. However, WARN notifications only cover certain states and do not reflect the full count of Amazon's global workforce. Nevertheless, these notifications highlight how AI-driven efficiency and the post-pandemic hiring boom have shaped technology personnel.
