Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) announced that recent corporate layoffs have significantly affected engineering positions. A total of about 4,700 positions, corresponding to 40% of the layoffs, have been canceled in Washington, New York, New Jersey, and California.
These layoffs are part of a broader plan the company announced to streamline its white-collar workforce and redirect resources towards priority projects involving artificial intelligence. In light of the announcement of over 14,000 corporate job cuts made in October, Mid-Level Software Engineers (SDE II) have experienced disproportionately more cuts.
CEO Andy Jassy and HR Chief Beth Galetti stated that among the objectives of these moves is to reduce layers to accelerate decision-making processes. Amazon indicated that it will continue to hire in strategic areas.
Analysts note that this restructuring is not yet over; further cuts are expected to occur in January. However, WARN notices only cover certain states and do not reflect the full count of Amazon's global workforce. Nevertheless, these notices highlight how AI-driven efficiency and the post-pandemic hiring boom have shaped technology personnel.
