Amazon is preparing for a historic layoff process, announcing this week that it will lay off 30,000 workers. This decision represents 10% of the company's total corporate workforce and is expected to have a significant impact on Amazon's approximately 350,000 corporate employees.

If all 30,000 layoffs are carried out, it will be recorded as the largest job loss in Amazon's 30-year history, following a period in 2022 when 27,000 workers were laid off. It is noted that this past layoff was related to over-expansion during the pandemic and increased demand.

Amazon employs 1.55 million people worldwide and is an important employer for many graduate students. Positions to be cut include Human Resources, devices and services, operations, and corporate functions within Amazon Web Services.

The rationale behind these layoffs includes Amazon's goals to streamline its operations and increase automation. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is taking steps to reduce bureaucracy and eliminate middle management, encouraging the replacement of some corporate functions with artificial intelligence tools.

Additionally, Amazon plans to hire about 250,000 temporary warehouse and logistics workers for the holiday season. This situation highlights the company's strategy of investing in frontline logistics while reducing corporate costs.

Other technology companies have also made similar cuts during this period. In 2025, 98,344 tech employees were laid off from 216 companies, and this industry-wide change will also affect universities' current curricula and job opportunities for graduates.
