Alphabet (GOOGL) announced that it has begun selling its next-generation Ironwood chip. This chip is the company's seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) designed for large-scale artificial intelligence projects. The Ironwood chip can connect 9,216 chips together in each pod and offers four times the performance of its predecessor.
Google stated that it will use up to one million Ironwood TPUs to support the Claude chatbot from AI firm Anthropic. This situation highlights the increasing demand for specialized silicon beyond Nvidia's Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The introduction of the new chip is part of Google's efforts to gain deeper momentum in artificial intelligence infrastructure and cloud computing.
The company reported third-quarter cloud revenue of $15.15 billion, representing a 34% increase compared to the same period last year. To support the rising demand for artificial intelligence, it raised its annual capital expenditure forecast to $93 billion. This development represents a critical step in Google's efforts to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities and attract enterprise developers.
