Based in Munich, the Ifo Economic Research Institute has announced the results of the Germany Business Survey conducted with the participation of approximately 9,000 companies for the month of November.
The Ifo Business Climate Index fell from 88.4 points in October to 88.1 points in November, reflecting a worsening of expectations among business managers for the coming period. The upward trend in the index observed over the last six months stalled in September, and after a brief increase in October, it has again declined.
Market expectations had aimed for the index to rise to 88.5 points, but this prediction did not materialize.
In November, the Ifo Expectations Index dropped from 91.6 to 90.6 points. In contrast, the Current Situation Index increased from 85.3 to 85.6 points.
The Ifo survey indicated a deterioration in expectations regarding the future of manufacturing sectors and a decrease in new orders. Retailers, in particular, expressed disappointment ahead of the Christmas season.
Ifo President Clemens Fuest commented on the index, stating, "Companies do not expect a rapid economic recovery."
Landesbank Baden-Württemberg Economist Jens-Oliver Niklasch characterized this situation as "another disappointment," stating that "the improvement in companies' current situations is practically insignificant. The deterioration of expectations is a warning."
Hauck Aufhauser Lampe Privatbank Chief Economist Alexander Krüger pointed out that the potential impact on the German economy if the government's stimulus package does not materialize is concerning and emphasized the need for the government to quickly shift its policy approach.
