Former Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz described this military expansion as a historic turning point. His conservative successor Friedrich Merz is striving to give a new direction to security architecture in Europe by supporting this expansion.

In a live broadcast on ARD, Merz stated the goal of making the German Armed Forces the strongest conventional army in Europe, saying, "We want to be able to defend ourselves, so we never have to find ourselves needing to defend ourselves.
