Historic Defense Vote in Germany

The German Federal Parliament is in the process of approving a record 52 billion euros defense order. This significant step is seen as a key indicator of the country's increased military spending.

Notable Defense Orders

The approved orders cover a wide range of materials and services, including:

  • 22 billion euros worth of ballistic military equipment and clothing,
  • 4.2 billion euros worth of Puma infantry fighting vehicles,
  • 3 billion euros worth of Arrow 3 air defense missiles and launchers,
  • 1.6 billion euros worth of surveillance satellites.

Change in Germany's Defense Policies

According to sources, this vote is not only the approval of the largest consistent orders but also represents the biggest government contract approved in a single session by the German Federal Parliament's budget committee.

Germany has decided to significantly increase defense spending, moving beyond years of fiscal constraints, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This strategic shift enables the allocation of billions of euros to strengthen military preparedness.

Vision for the Future

Former Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz described this military expansion as a historic turning point. His conservative successor Friedrich Merz is striving to give a new direction to security architecture in Europe by supporting this expansion.

In a live broadcast on ARD, Merz stated the goal of making the German Armed Forces the strongest conventional army in Europe, saying, "We want to be able to defend ourselves, so we never have to find ourselves needing to defend ourselves. We are obligated to ensure that my children and grandchildren live in peace."
