In Adana, an important center for citrus production in Turkey, the mandarin harvest began in the last days of September this year. The strike initiated by agricultural workers nationwide led to a decrease in mandarin prices and a reduction in costs. As a result of the strike, mandarin prices unexpectedly became cheaper than in Sudan. This situation attracted the attention of both consumers and producers.
In the Çukurova region, mandarins are grown on approximately 383 thousand acres, and despite facing some challenges this year, the situation remains notable. Particularly, many agricultural products in Çukurova suffered significant damage due to frost this year. However, early mandarin varieties such as okitsu, mihowase, early, and primasol were not affected by the cold weather and maintained their productivity.
The decision of agricultural workers to strike has caused an unexpected change in the sector, while it seems that producers and traders have managed to reduce their costs. According to the data obtained, this decrease in mandarin prices can be seen as a positive development for both producers and consumers.
The mandarin harvest that started this year offers a different perspective in terms of both labor force and climate conditions. This change in the agricultural sector could be just one of the factors that will be decisive for the future of citrus production in Adana. As competition increases, producers may be forced to further reduce prices.
