New car sales in the European Union (EU) automobile market reached 677,786 units in August 2024, up 5.3 percent year-on-year.
Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) revealed important information on new car registrations in EU countries. Last month, new car sales grew by 677,786 vehicles year-on-year.
The breakdown of new car sales was as follows: 33.9% hybrid, 26.3% gasoline, 17.8% electric, 10.4% plug-in hybrid, 8.8% diesel and 2.8% other fuel types. Especially electric car sales increased by 30.2 percent year-on-year to 120,797 units in this period. The share of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in total sales was 62.1%.
As of August, new car sales increased by 5% in Germany, 2.2% in France and 17.2% in Spain. However, there was a decrease of 2.7% in Italy.
From January to August, total new car sales decreased by 0.1% year-on-year to 7,168,848 vehicles.
The Volkswagen Group sold the most new cars in the EU in August, with 190,142 vehicles. The Stellantis Group (including Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel brands) followed in second place with 95,966 sales. The Renault Group is in third place with a total of 69,562 new car sales.
