U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced new measures to enhance aviation safety following the crash of a cargo plane shortly after takeoff in Kentucky. Duffy stated that the crash was not related to air traffic control and that the issues were mechanically related.
Duffy emphasized that due to the government shutdown, most air traffic controllers and Transportation Department employees have not received their paychecks. It was noted that controllers who received only partial payment at the beginning of October have not received their second payment. This situation has led to employees seeking additional work.
The Transportation Secretary indicated that with the increase in personnel shortages, delays and cancellations in flights have occurred. Duffy said, “Ensuring safe travel is our top priority. Therefore, we will take additional measures for the risk profile in the national airspace.” Among these measures is a 10 percent reduction in flight capacity at 40 locations. These restrictions are set to be implemented starting Friday morning.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford announced that they have concluded that a 10 percent reduction in capacity is appropriate to relieve some of the pressure on air traffic controllers.
