After the government being closed for 40 days, Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Senate reached an agreement on a temporary budget. This compromise is considered an important step towards reopening the government.
In a session held on Sunday evening local time, the Senate is expected to vote on funding the government until the end of January. If the temporary budget bill passes the Senate, it will be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives for discussion, and then forwarded to the White House.
Democratic senators Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, and Angus King announced that they would support the budget if the Senate approves the 3-year spending proposal. However, they have reduced expectations for extending health care subsidies, paving the way for this process.
Senate Majority Leader Republican John Thune approved the compromise made on Sunday night and called for an emergency vote. These developments are creating a positive atmosphere aimed at ending the government shutdown.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated in an announcement, "We are very close to ending the government shutdown." This indicates that steps to implement the agreement will be followed rapidly.
