U.S. Federal Government Reopens

Following the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives also approved the temporary budget bill aimed at reopening the federal government, which had shut down on October 1.

Details of the Temporary Budget Bill

The budget bill provides funding for most federal agencies until January 30, and for some throughout the fiscal year. The bill was passed in the House of Representatives with 222 "yes" votes and 209 "no" votes.

Only 2 Republican members of the House opposed the bill, while 6 Democratic members supported it.

The bill is now expected to go to President Donald Trump for his signature. With Trump's signature, the federal government, which has been closed for 43 days, will resume operations.

Longest Shutdown in Country's History

The U.S. government shut down on October 1 after Congress failed to approve a temporary budget bill to fund the federal government before the new fiscal year began. Federal agencies, having lost their spending authority, suspended their operations; this led to the longest shutdown in the country's history.

As the 40th day of the shutdown approached, Democratic and Republican senators managed to reach an agreement on a temporary budget to reopen the government.

The decision by Democratic senators to back down from the demand for guarantees on the extension of health care subsidies cleared the way for the process. The bill was approved in a Senate vote held late Monday, local time, with 60 votes in favor and 40 votes against.
